Designer: Benjamin Hubert
Country: England, 1984.
Style: Focus on innovative new design processes – the unexpected.
It is always depressing when you read about a designer who was born in the same year as you – international acclaim, a multitude of design awards for a string of innovative and timeless designs – all achieved in approximately the same tally of years that you have existed….sigh. But we must not be depressed – we must REJOICE and be thankful that these young (yes 30 is young) wipper snappers exist – and this particular wipper snapper is, Mr Benjamin Hubert.
Hubert graduated in Industrial Design and Technology at Loughborough University in 2006 and has gone on to great things – the winner of two Red Dot Design awards as well as numerous Elle Decoration, IF and Design Museum and Icon awards and nominations – he is certainly making waves.
With clients such as Poltrona Frau, Cappellini, Casamania, Ligne Roset, De La Espada and Aram to name a few, Benjamin’s career is well on it’s way yet he is just getting started.
He takes his inspiration from everyday objects and the more unusual – such as his Maritime chair for Casamania -inspired by traditional wooden shipbuilding techniques, Maritime is a solid wood range of chairs that are skinned internally with a formed plywood shell. The seat bares resemblance to the hull of a ship, the solid ash ribs make the chair robust while an ash laminate seat result in minimal materials with maximum effect. These unusual shapes, unexpected materials and real consideration into how the product is used resonates through out his designs. Here are a few of our favourite Hubert designs. Labwear, Cappellini, Poltrona Frau and De La Espada are all available from Catalog Ltd.
